What is California Proposition 65?
California Proposition 65, formally known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires the State of California to maintain and update a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
Businesses are required to provide clear and reasonable warnings to California residents if their products contain any listed chemicals, or if exposure to those chemicals may occur through normal use, handling, installation, maintenance, or operation of the product.
🔬 Why This Matters
Prop 65 warnings help California consumers make informed decisions. A warning does not necessarily mean a product is unsafe when used as directed. It means that the product may contain, or may expose users to, a chemical listed by the State of California.
📋 Our Commitment
Portside Direct is committed to transparency and product safety information. We encourage customers to review manufacturer instructions, product documentation, labels, warnings, and safe handling guidance before using any marine or boating product.
Chemicals of Concern
Some marine and boating products sold by Portside Direct may contain, or may expose users to, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. These may vary depending on the product type, material, coating, fuel source, electrical component, or manufacturer.
May be found in some metal components, batteries, terminals, electrical parts, solder, brass fittings, coatings, weights, and hardware. Exposure can occur through handling, installation, or maintenance.
May be produced by gasoline engines, generators, heaters, grills, and other combustion equipment. Proper ventilation and safe operation are essential, especially around enclosed cabins, cockpits, swim platforms, and docks.
May be present in stainless steel, plated hardware, fasteners, tools, marine fittings, and other metal components commonly used in boating and marine environments.
May be found in certain plastics, vinyl products, hoses, wiring insulation, covers, storage products, packaging, and flexible marine accessories.
Other listed chemicals may be present depending on the specific product, manufacturer, material, or use case. Always review individual product warnings, packaging, labels, and documentation.
